Irrigation: Irrigate vegetable crops at 8 to 10 days in summer and 12 to 15 days in winter.

Fertilizer: If maximum use of organic manure is required then use of DAP and urea manure in small quantity if there is a need to use chemical manure.

 Pest Control in Kitchen Garden:

In the case of home grown vegetable crops, pest infestation is initially found on certain parts of the plant (sting, bud, flower, fruit).  So initially dismantle such infested parts and dispose of them properly.  Destroy various stages of the pest (Ida cluster, large caterpillars and cocoons) by weaving from the plant.  Periodically cultivating the soil around the plants can destroy the soil conditions of certain pests.  Do not over-irrigate.  Excessive use of organic fertilizers (manure, meal, vermicompost, pressed etc.) and organic fertilizers (biofertilizers) can prevent weevil infestation.  Neem meal and poultry manure provide protection to the crop against worms.

Leaf extract of some native plants (Neem, Karanj, Mahudo, Arduso, Matsyagandhati, Pili Karen, Daturo, Mint, Sitaphali, Bougainvillea) provides protection against pests by spraying in vegetable crops.  Of all these plants, neem is the most important for pest control.  Fresh neem leaves (10%) and neem kernels have been found to be effective in reducing the population.  Using such a vegetative formulation prevents the insects from laying eggs and the insects that cannot eat the sprinkled part die slowly.

In addition pests can be controlled using pheromone traps, planting of yellow millet, streaky traps.  However, if there is a need to spray pesticides, use information from a specialist rather than haphazard use.

 Disease Control in Kitchen Garden:

Dharu Kahovaro: For Dharu Kohwara, use symmetrical seeds as recommended in Dharuva Wadia (do not use more seeds).  0.6% Bordeaux mixture (600 gm Morthuthu, 600 gm lime, Bordeaux mixture in 100 liters of water should be used wisely) or Metalaxyl MZ-72 drug at 15 gm per 100 liters of water.  Apply 3 liters per square meter in the soil with Zara.

Leaf spot disease: Different species of bacteria are found in each vegetable.  Mancozeb 75% V.P. in standing crop at the onset of the disease.  The drug is dissolved in 30 g, 10 liters of water or Carbendazim 50% V.P.  Make a solution in 10 gms, 10 liters of water and spray for 10 to 15 days.

White powdery mildew: To control this disease, spray wetable sulfur in 10 liters of water at the rate of 25 gms.

Sukaro and Kohwaro: To control the disease, apply organic fungus Trichoderma in the soil as recommended.

In the use of vegetables, it should be kept in mind that vegetables are not only eaten for taste and hobby, but also the art and science of buying, cooking and using should be learned.

Vegetables should be used fresh as far as possible and washed and rinsed thoroughly in running water only after repairs as the effect of chemical pesticides can be avoided.

Use only edible vegetables with peel.  Most of the important nutrients are in the greenish part of the bottom of the vegetable peel which we throw in the bins like kanchan and put the fibrous (cellulose) waste in the stomach.
